Young Carers Study Generates Funding
In 2009 the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs commissioned the Child and Family Research Centre to undertake a Study of Young Carers in the Irish Population. In writing the Report the CFRC worked closely with Ireland’s Carers Association, particularly in the recruitment of participants. The Report was launched at the Carers Association’s annual national conference in 2010.
The Report found that there are no services or supports specifically for young carers and that young carers require services along with informal supports. On the basis of the findings of the Report the Carers Association has been successful in securing funding for on-line support for young carers as well as the delivery of a young carers programme. The following funding has been secured:
• €45,000 committed from the Department of Health and Children's National Lottery funding for the purpose of creating online and print-based resource packs and toolkits for Young Carers, teachers, social workers and health professionals.
• €35,000 in 2011 and €75,000 in each of 2012 and 2013 (subject to funding being available in the annual budget) from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government for the purpose of hiring staff to outreach and deliver the Young Carers Programme.
