Child and Family Research Centre lunchtime seminar “A Contested Area – Practice, Research and Inclusion”

A presentation of the 2011 Child and Family Research Centre lunch time seminar series took place on Wednesday 18th May 2011 between 1pm-2pm. The seminar entitled “A Contested Area – Practice, Research and Inclusion” was presented by Dr. Seamus Morrisey, Education Officer with Galway City Partnership.

The presentation explored the areas of practice, research and inclusion based on research carried out in relation to Early School Leaving in Galway City. Dr. Seamus Morrissey, through the promotion of the student voice, provided an insight into the issue of Early School Leaving in the context of inclusion and current practices in Galway City. The presentation also explored the processes and challenges of developing a community based issue into a research/ academic framework.

Dr. Seamus Morrissey has worked in the area of formal and informal education for over 15 years and currently works as an Education Officer with Galway City Partnership. The core function of this position is to promote social inclusion, with a particular focus on education and young people. Seamus completed his Doctorate in 2010, with the title of the research being “A critical examination of Government Policy in relation to Early School Leaving”. Furthermore, Seamus has overseen the development of the Incredible Years Programme in Galway City since 2005. Seamus was one of the first accredited facilitator of the Incredible Years Parent Programme in Ireland as well as being trained to deliver the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management Programme.
