FAMILY SUPPORT NOW
REFLECTING ON CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES
Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June 2009

The CFRC’s bi-annual conference took place on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June 2009. The conference entitled “Family Support Now: Reflecting on Contemporary Challenges” provided a unique opportunity for practitioners, service providers and researchers to share knowledge and experience from both applied practice and theoretical perspectives in Family Support. The conference explored how policy making and service delivery of Family Support Programmes have evolved in the past decade, in Ireland and internationally as well as addressing key future challenges.

Dr John Canavan, Associate Director of the Child and Family Research Centre
Dr John Davis, Head of Department in Educational Studies, together with Ms Mary Smith, Integration Manager with a local authority in Scotland and Associate Lecture, both from the University of Edinburgh
Professor Tony Fahy, Head of Applied Social Sciences in University College Dublin
Professor Matthew R Sanders, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Queensland
Professor Alan Smith, UNESCO Chair in Education at the University of Ulster
Father Aidan Troy, who came to global attention during the loyalist blockade of Holy Cross Primary School in North Belfast

Special Guest this year was award winning novelist, Pat McCabe author of “The Butcher Boy”, “Breakfast on Pluto” and “Winter Wood”. In a wide-ranging and hugely entertaining presentation Mr McCabe highlighted some of the costs to society of the Celtic Tiger years, emphasising the need for Ireland to find news ways to be inclusive and cohesive.
